Gaming sales are powered almost exclusively by customer buying but in recent years the business model has changed greatly. Purchasers now purchase less games than years ago, but spend more time playing such games, moving the business model from a single-unit to the ongoing revenue generated by an engaged users base.
The industry is now laser-focused on rising interaction per customer. Apart from creating video games as compelling as possible, adoption of in-game monetization chances has been the strategy for doing so. This additional downloadable content (DLC) might include expansion packs, new features, resources, and characters, as well as "loot boxes," which are a virtual object lotery.

The worldwide video game market is estimated to be worth $159 billion in 2020, about four times box office sales ($43 billion in 2019) and nearly three times music industry sales ($57 billion in 2019). The largest industry by income is Asia-Pacific with almost 50 percent of the games market by value. North America contributes a fifth of its sales.
